fluting, A fluting is the snow that clings to the side of the mountain. Because of little avalanches this is carved out into sort of vertical runs. A fluting is the way the snow has gathered in kind of a stripey way down the face of the mountain. Makes a vertical hill and valley kind of formation, a grooved pleat.
serac, A large pointed mass of ice in a glacier isolated by intersecting crevasses. A pinnacle of ice among the crevasses of a glacier; also, one of the blocks into which a glacier breaks on a steep grade.
gully, A deep ditch or channel cut in the earth by running water after a prolonged downpour.
meringue A snow formation like on a pie, with whips and peaks and is puffy looking, like a cornice.
avalanche, A fall or slide of a large mass, as of snow or rock, down a mountainside.
moraine, An accumulation of boulders, stones, or other debris carried and deposited by a glacier.
boulder, A large smooth mass of rock detached from its place of origin.
lee, An area sheltered from the wind: in the lee of the boulder.
dusk, The darker stage of twilight, especially in the evening.
tangles, A confused, intertwined mass.
friend, A cramming device, something you put into a crack in the rock where it will get stuck, so that you can attach a carabiner to it and clip your rope through for protection.
bivouac, spending a night out in the open (usually in the mountains) with only limited shelter, e.g., small bivouac tent, bivouac bag, snow hole etc.
karrimat, an insulating sleeping mat, made of some sort of foam.
piton, a metal hook or ring that is hammered into a crack or into the rock. They often have an eye for a rope to pass through or clip into with your trusty quickdraw.
